An ugly scene on Mishawaka Ave. was avoided by few feet Tuesday afternoon in South Bend.

Mishawaka Ave. is still completely blocked from the 24th St. to Ironwood Dr. after a car crashed into a storefront shortly after noon. Officers on the scene on the 2200 block of Mishawaka Ave. said a Mercedes sedan was traveling south on 23rd St. when it came to a T-shaped intersection with Mishawaka Ave., and rolled right through it.

Police say the car crashed into a storefront at 2224 Mishawaka Ave., went through the glass window and careened into the very back of the building before stopping. Luckily, it was an empty storefront. Next door was a Chinese restaurant at lunch hour, full of customers. Less lucky was a sapling on the sidewalk, which was snapped in half at its base on impact with the car.

The driver, said to be a man in his 20s or 30s, was able to walk away from the crash with minimal injuries. No citations nor arrests have been made
