Favre going into Packers Hall of Fame

Posted: Updated:
Green Bay, WI (WXOW) - GREEN BAY, Wis. (WXOW) - Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre said Monday its time to come back.

The team, along with Favre joining by phone, announced Monday afternoon that he'll be inducted into the team's Hall of Fame and have his jersey retired next year.

Packers Hall of Fame president Perry Kidder said that Favre will be enshrined in the new Hall of Fame currently under construction at Lambeau Field.

Team President and CEO Mark Murphy told the media Favre is the only one slated for induction in the hall in 2015. Favre also has the distinction of being the first player place into the new hall next July 18. As part of the ceremonies, Favre's number 4 jersey is set for retirement. A team spokesperson said tickets for the induction won't be on sale until after the first of the year.

While that date is firmly placed, the date for the public jersey retirement wasn't announced. The team is still trying to figure out which game to choose for the halftime event.

For his part, Favre had nothing but complimentary things to say about the organization.  He said, "It's more than a dream come true. I'm truly honored.  It is time to come back." He went on to say how humbled he was to have his name placed alongside names like Bart Starr, Ray Nitchke, and Reggie White. He also added he was "proud of the fact I was part of a winning organization. I was just one piece of the puzzle," referring to his 16 years with the team and his accomplishments as a Packer.

In addition to his family, Favre did say he wanted two others to join him at the jersey retirement ceremony. He said he'd love to have former GM Ron Wolf and former coach Mike Holmgren walk out with him onto Lambeau Field for the ceremony. On his website, Favre earlier wrote that what he did in his professional career wouldn't be possible if not for the foresight of former general manager Ron Wolf, who he says is the greatest GM in the history of the NFL. Holmgren guided Favre on the field from 1992-1998 and a Super Bowl XXXI victory.
