Early morning police pursuit leads to federal charge

Carla Merriweather, 25, has been identified as the suspect in custody for the alleged police pursuit that ended early Wednesday morning in the parking lot of the U.S. Postal Service on Main Street near Chippewa, South Bend.

South Bend police officers gave pursuit around 3 a.m. in response to a stolen truck driven by a female suspect, later identified as Merriweather. As she was fleeing, Merriweather allegedly fired shots at the officers giving pursuit. During the pursuit, at least one officer reportedly returned fire. Merriweather was taken into custody for questioning and later booked into the St. Joseph County jail.

County Metro Homicide was called in to investigate, as a part of protocol, as Merriweather allegedly fired at police officers and at least one officer allegedly returned fire.

After consultation with the federal authorities, a federal criminal complaint was filed against Merriweather today. According to a press release, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office will not be filing criminal charges against Merriweather.
