As tradition dictates, New Carlisle Firefighters walked about a mile and a half from town behind Engine 91, which carried Assistant Chief Jamie Middlebrook to the cemetery.

Middlebrook's comrades served as pall-bearers. A rainy morning giving way to a sun-filled afternoon as the burial began.

"All mighty God into your hands we command your son Jamie Middlebrook."

After the religious committal, first responders honored their Assistant Chief.

"His task completed, his duties well done, to our fallen brother his last alarm. He is going home."

The bell represents the historic call to fight a fire.

An honor guard presented the flag, and Middlebrook's helmet, to his wife, Julie.
First responders then solemnly, one by one, placed a carnation on his coffin.

"The white stands for a good life, a pure life, and a career serving his community. There is a red dot on the carnation and it symbolizes the bloodshed Jamie gave protecting the community in a time of tragedy," said Officer McDaniel, a DNR Officer representing the Fraternal Order of Police Critical Incident/Memorial Team.

Officer McDaniel says the mourning doesn't end here.

"They will strive to reach a new normal. Things will never be the same for them," Officer McDaniel said.
