Kate Upton lights up Niles football season

When Niles Athletic Director Jeff Upton told the football team they would be getting new lights, coach Antwon Jones was ecstatic.

"I was excited I think I set my phone down and said let there be light!" said Jones.

The Vikings have had the same set of lights since the 1960s, so needless to say they were in need of an upgrade.

"At times I saw myself out there holding my iPhone out there with the flashlight trying to watch the play," said Jones. "So we definitely needed the new lights."

The school would have replaced the lights awhile ago if they had the option, but they just weren't in the budget.

That is why the AD Upton gave his daughter a call, who just happens to be international supermodel Kate Upton.

Sure enough Kate, who was born in St. Joseph, MI, was able to pull some strings and get the school a $50,000 grant to replace the 50 year old lights.

"I think it says a lot about Kate and her upbringing," said Jones. "Obviously she comes from good stock and she was raised right to not to forget the little people. Which you know in the big scheme of things supermodel, Niles, we're the little people in that situation."

Coach Jones is not the only one appreciative of Kate's generosity. The players are looking forward to the full experience of what Friday Night Lights really means.

Especially considering what they were used to.

"In the end zone it was kind of dimmer, in the middle of the field you could see more, but I'm pretty sure we'll be able to score a lot more touchdowns now," said Warren Smith, Niles Senior RB/CB.

While they cannot wait to see the new lights when they have their first home game, the players also would not mind seeing Kate herself on the sidelines sometime this season.

"That'd be, I don't know I'd just burst. I wouldn't know what to feel," said Sean Craig, Niles Senior LB/WR "I'll take that over the lights (laughs)."

The lights are expected to take two weeks to install and the school will debut them during their home opener against Benton Harbor.

Jeff said he is unsure if Kate will attend any of the Vikings home games this year, but he added at this point she has no plans to.
