Crime overall down in South Bend but violent crime up

The South Bend Police department released the July crime report Tuesday, reporting a slight drop in crime overall. While crime overall is down in South Bend, but the number of violent crimes is on the rise.

In July of 2013, two murders happened in South Bend. That's compared to one murder recorded in the city for last month. So far this year, there has been a 60 percent increase in the murder rate compared to last year at this time. From January to July in 2013 five murders were reported. This year there has been eight reported so far. These numbers do not cover three recent murders that have not been officially added to the total yet. With the homicide of Halo Stutzman and two other murders so far in August already, there is an unofficial murder count of 11 in South Bend so far this year.

The number of aggravated assaults has also increased. 105 were reported in 2013, and 132 year to date.  Other areas have seen declines. The city has seen a 21 percent decline in the number of residential burglaries so far, from this year to last.
