State Police to conduct sobriety checkpoint Friday

Posted: Updated:
Indiana State Police Sergeant Bruce Duhaime announced Tuesday that State Police posted in Bremen will conduct a sobriety checkpoint Friday evening in Elkhart County.

Even though a main reason for the checkpoints is Troopers performing saturation patrols looking for impaired drivers, Duhamie said they also perform the checkpoints to educate people about the ongoing efforts of the State Police. Duhamie also said in a press release that the goal for the checkpoints is to deter people from driving while intoxicated and ultimately reduce the numbers of crashes caused by impaired drivers.

Duhamie said motorists should have their driver's license and vehicle registration ready as they enter the checkpoint. This will minimize the time spent at the checkpoint. Duhamie said this measure should reduce delays to only two to three minutes.

The Indiana State Police provided a list of precautions they encourage people to take.

  •  Plan ahead and always choose a designated driver
  • Don't get behind the wheel if you have been drinking alcoholic beverages
  • If you are impaired call a taxi, sober friend or family member to come and get you
  • If you host a party, offer alcohol-free beverages, and make sure all your guests leave with a sober driver.
  • If your friend is impaired or you think they might be impaired, take their keys and do not let them leave your sight if you think they are about to drive.
