After coaching the Notre Dame Track and Cross Country teams for 26 seasons, Tim Connelly is no longer a coach for the Fighting Irish.  Notre Dame Sports Information Director John Heisler said that after Joe Piane retired, the new coach had the ability to hire a new staff. Heisler said Connelly was not part of that plan.

Piane retired after 39 years as the head coach of Notre Dame earlier this summer.  After Piane's retirement, Alan Turner was named as his replacement on July 18.  Connelly was a Notre Dame graduate and graduate assistant before becoming the head women's cross-country coach and women's track coach. Paiane had 33 years total of running and coaching experience under the golden Dome.

Notre Dame has not made an announcement or confirmed anything, but FOX 28 has learned that Notre Dame has accepted Matt Sparks, of Southern Illinois, to replace Connelly.

Two sources said that he was offered and has accepted the position.  Sparks grew up in Noblesville, went to IU, was an assistant at Ohio State and has been coaching track and x-country at SIU the past 12 years.
