UPDATE: South Bend Airport will not allow Uber drivers to pick up passengers

SOUTH BEND - UPDATE: South Bend International Airport officials announced Thursday that Uber drivers will not be allowed to pick up their passengers. The restriction due to an ordinance established earlier this year requiring all drivers-for-hire to have a pre-existing contract with the airport.

“Our ordinance and rules and regulations are in place for the safety of the traveling public,” said SBN Executive Director Mike Daigle. “This is why the approved vehicles for hire option at SBN is taxi cabs at this time.”

According to the Associated Press, Uber was founded in 2009. It links cars to passengers with GPS enabled smart phones. People looking for a ride can request the nearest car, see how far away it is, and watch on a map as it drives to pick them up.

Uber is offering users free five rides in South Bend through September to celebrate being in 100 cities.

The company isn't controversy free. It's gotten push back in some cities from taxi regulatory agencies.
