State Treasurer Mourdock announces resignation almost four months before end of term

Indiana Treasurer Richard Mourdock submitted a letter of resignation Friday to Gov. Mike Pence, the treasurer's office said in a press release.

The treasurer's term was scheduled to expire at the end of the year, but the resignation letter said Murdock was leaving office early to pursue other professional interests. The letter said some of those interests included helping Americans save for retirement and post high school education.

In the press release, Mourdock noted the accomplishments of the past seven years. Some of the accomplishments listed included enrollment in college savings plans increased, with almost $3 billion now being saved for post high school education.

In the press release, Mourdock said he was proud of his staff for their accomplishments.

“I'm proud to have been a part of all that was required to achieve so much,” Treasurer Mourdock told his staff.

Chairman John Zody published a statement on Mourdock's resignation, noting it was the first news from Mourdock since his earlier outbursts at the Republican Convention.

While I wish him well personally,” Zody said, “his service to the state has been largely marked by statements and actions that divide us and hinder our state's economy, such as his suing of Chrysler.”
