The snow and extremely cold temperatures we're expecting can be a recipe for disaster for homeowners.
We talked to an area roofing company for tips on avoiding ice dams.
Paul Schmitt from JC Lauer and company says, if you have alot of snow on your roof - take a snow rake and pull snow off from the edge and up about 3 feet.
After that, he suggests throwing some environmentally safe salt up there because it's the most gentle.
Icycles forming are one of the first signs of an ice dam and the conditions will soon be ripe for them.
"But when it's like this, the most dangerous situation is when you have a foot of snow and the temperatures drop down to freezing just like what it's doing now."
Lauer also says the more insulation you can put in your attic right now, the better. If you can't reach your roof and think you may need some help, call a local roofing contrator.
